The James Beard Award winning Guelaguetza was opened in 1994 by immigrant husband and wife Fernando Lopez and Maria Monterrubio. A true Los Angeles treasure — this authentic, Oaxacan restaurant makes wondrous moles from scratch, from the classic mole negro to the herbaceous mole verde. Now run by their children, they have stayed the course of their parents, priding themselves in preserving their Oaxacan culture through family recipes. Their efforts have led to a wide range of culinary accolades — most recently, the coveted James Beard Award for the American Classics category.
